Measuring the Maturity of the Sri Lankan Electorate - Kishali pinto jayawardena

electoralIf Sri Lanka’s political and legal history since independence demonstrates one fact, it is the fundamental dishonesty of those whom we elect to serve us. Even the rare exceptions to this rule have failed to emulate an Ambedkar, a Gandhi or a Nehru whose visions and dreams lifted Indian society from its depths and fashioned an inimitable national spirit which carried that country through decades of communal turmoil.

Unsuitable people being nominated by recognised political parties for elections

An amendment to the Constitution (Article 89 - Disqualification to be an elector, Article 91 - Disqualification for election as a MP) to expand the qualifications and disqualifications of a candidate, to incorporate, among other things, the following:

From black July 1983 to manifestos for peace

black julyThe rampant violence that engulfed the Tamil people 23 July 1983 and days that followed discredited Sri Lanka internationally and signaled the brain-drain among the Tamils that would impact the future economic and political trajectory of the country. It also led to a costly and brutal war that lasted until May 2009, tore up the fabric of society and undermined the national economy.

Between fear and hope - Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratna

hope and fearIf we go by orthodox Marxist analysis we may classify the political stage we are going through as a Kerenskyan period. In Russia when the Czarist regime was overthrown in 1917 February there was a dual power situation. On one side imperial state was trying to survive by reforms, headed by liberal bourgeoisie; on the other hand masses were demanding full freedom and democracy; and they were represented by peoples assemblies formed throughout the country.

The Man Who's Disrupting Politics As Usual in Sri Lanka

maithipala temple 2For much of the past decade, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was more or less a family business — one that happened to be run on an island just 22 miles off the coast of the second-largest country in the world and astride a key shipping lane to the largest. By one estimate, former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his two high-ranking brothers controlled up to 70 percent of the nation’s budget, while 29 members of their extended family held senior positions in the government, civil service or industry.

Critically Assessing That ‘Stunner’ of a Presidential Speech

m3 speech 20Those who constantly complain (with good reason) that the Southern political dynamic disregards the sentiments of minority voters may take heart from President Maithripala Sirisena’s advice during this Tuesday’s special statement to the media.

Sri Lanka - Country of Concern

uk 1Corporate report
The human rights situation in Sri Lanka continued to be of concern in 2014, with little overall improvement. The UK remained concerned over a number of issues: restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly; increases in attacks on Muslim and Evangelical Christian minorities; reports of torture and allegations of extrajudicial killings; and restrictions faced by minority Tamils in formerly conflict-affected areas in the north and east. Human rights defenders (HRDs) and those with dissenting voices were intimidated and subjected to harassment. Read more...

Path Opens for Ex-President of Sri Lanka to Make Comeback

mr 16 07Former President Mahinda Rajapakse of Sri Lanka, who was defeated in January, now has a chance to make a major political comeback after his successor cleared the way for him to run for a seat in Parliament in elections scheduled for Aug. 17.

President Maithripala Sirisena said this week that he did not have the power to block Mr. Rajapakse’s run for Parliament, because the alliance of parties he leads is still dominated by people loyal to the former president. But Mr. Sirisena has come under fire from some of his former supporters.
